What “no record found” does not mean

Public auction history comes from aggregators and their coverage is not complete. If no record is found for a VIN, that does not confirm a clean history — it only means the car does not appear in these sources. In that case the car should be inspected in person, with a mechanic.

Specifications always come from NHTSA's official database, never from assumptions; history and photos are shown only when the source page carries exactly this VIN. If two sources contradict each other, we flag it rather than merging them into one story.

Is the VIN check free?

Yes. Specifications, public auction history and photos are free and need no registration. Chatting with the assistant requires an account; the free tier includes 8 messages per day.

What is a VIN and where do I find it?

The VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) is the car's unique 17-character number. It is on the lower corner of the windshield on the driver's side, on the driver's door-jamb sticker, in the registration document and on the insurance policy. The letters I, O and Q never appear in a VIN.

Which cars have history available?

Public history mainly covers North American market cars — exactly the ones that arrive in Georgia from Copart and IAAI auctions. For a European or Japanese domestic-market car the specifications will show, but an auction record may not exist.

How is this different from Carfax or ClearVIN?

How reliable is the auction history?

Records come from aggregators' public pages and are informational, not official. Photos are shown only from a page that carries exactly this VIN. Before a final decision, see the car in person.
