Customs calculator for importing a car into Georgia
Estimate what it costs to import a car into Georgia, using the current excise rates. Private individuals importing a passenger car pay no VAT and no import duty, so you do not need the price of the car.
How the amount is calculated
Total = excise (engine size × the rate for the car's age) + a fixed clearance and registration fee (480 GEL, which does not depend on the price of the car).
The rate is set by law and splits into two age bands: 1.5 GEL per cm³ for cars up to and including 6 years old, and 4.5 GEL for cars older than 6 years. Electric vehicles are exempt from excise, and for right-hand-drive cars the rate is tripled.
The calculator reads these rates from code rather than searching for them live — so the answer is instant and always the same for the same input. A separate automated check compares our table against the text of the law published on matsne.gov.ge once a day and warns us about any difference.

The table is for a 2026 declaration — age counts from the year of declaration, so the rows recalculate on 1 January.
How much does customs cost for a 2.0 petrol car in 2026?
A 3-year-old 2.0-litre petrol car (the 0-6 year band) comes to 3,480 ₾ in total, while the same engine at 8 years old comes to 9,480 ₾ — the whole difference is the age-based rate (1.5 GEL versus 4.5 GEL per cm³). Both figures already include the fixed clearance fee.
Do private individuals pay VAT when importing a car?
No. In Georgia, a private individual importing a passenger car for personal use pays no VAT and no import duty. You pay only the excise and the fixed clearance fee.
How is the excise rate determined?
Excise = engine size (cm³) × the rate for the car's age: 1.5 GEL for cars 0-6 years old and 4.5 GEL for cars older than 6 years (Tax Code, article 188; in force since 2 April 2026). Electric vehicles are exempt from excise. The 60% hybrid relief applies only to cars 0-6 years old. For right-hand-drive cars the rate is tripled.
Do I need to know the price of the car?
No. For a passenger car imported by a private individual, customs depends only on engine size and age; the market price is not needed for this calculation.
How accurate is this calculator?
The result is an estimate based on the current statutory rates. Always check the final, official amount with the rs.ge calculator before clearance.
